What the Alliance members say

The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance membership includes some of the biggest companies in the hotel industry. Hotel Business caught up with some of them to find out what they think of the organization and its new Pathway to Net Positive Hospitality for the Planet.

Accor: “[We have] a crucial role to play in making a positive impact and as a member of the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, we are well-positioned to bolster our efforts in tackling climate action with the effective collaboration of our industry peers,” said Brune Poirson, chief sustainability officer. “The Pathway for Net Positive Hospitality is SHA’s driving force and will lead to powerful outcomes. Through this collective approach, we can inspire real change and help shape the future of sustainable hospitality.”

Marriott International: “There is no denying the impact climate change is having; our industry has a responsibility to act, and through the Sustainable Hospitality Alliance, we can bring to life our collective vision for net positive hospitality,” said Denise Naguib, global VP, sustainability and supplier diversity. “At Marriott International, our sustainability strategy is multi-faceted from investments in biodiversity to cutting food waste in half to our science-based emissions reduction targets and net-zero commitments. But, we need all hotels, owners, investors, suppliers and associates to advance on their sustainability journeys as well, no matter their starting point.”

IHG Hotels & Resorts: “With thousands of hotels in more than 100 countries and more fantastic properties opening every year, it is critical that we operate sustainably and grow in the right way,” said Keith Barr, CEO. “As well as upgrading our science-based target, we have developed a comprehensive decarbonization roadmap, setting out plans to improve the energy efficiency of our existing hotels, help our owners source renewable energy and develop our approach to new-build properties that operate at very low or zero-carbon. But, beyond what we’re doing in our own hotels, we’re committed to being part of an industry-wide effort to create meaningful and tangible change. This means working closely with partners, industry bodies and governments to ensure the hospitality industry continues to evolve and innovate. The Sustainable Hospitality Alliance’s Pathway to Net Positive is an important part of this. The framework provides us with an invaluable opportunity to share expertise, learn and support our industry as it moves towards a better future.”
