Sustainable mattress offers a comfortable night’s sleep

“Heads in beads.” Everyone in the industry knows this phrase. It’s primarily how a hotel makes money. But those beds must have comfortable mattresses or else guests will complain and possibly write a bad review of the property.

To improve the guest sleep experience, Piana Sleep, the bedding division of Piana Technology, has introduced for hotels the Rinnovo mattress, which blends foam and the company’s V/SMART fiber technology to create a sustainable and comfortable mattress.

“V/SMART technology is a true game-changer in the world of mattresses,” said Silvia Galasso, EVP, Piana Sleep. “The key to V/SMART is the way we align the fibers vertically in a nonwoven design, giving the material incredible breathability and a really lightweight feel. More specifically, V/SMART is up to 10x more breathable, up to 60% lighter and emits up to 70% less CO2 than traditional polyurethane foam. When we incorporate it into our mattresses, it creates layers that keep air flowing continuously, which is crucial for maintaining a cooler, drier sleep environment.”

The Rinnovo mattress for hotels is made up of foam and Piana Sleep’s V/SMART fiber technology.

She added that V/SMART is also made with up to 70% recycled bottle flakes and is fully recyclable at the end of its life.

The Rinnovo mattress core is made of roughly 50% V/SMART and 50% foam and is available in multiple profiles with different combinations of foam and fiber layers. It comes in firm, medium and plush comfort levels.

“The top V/SMART layer features SmartSilver technology, which uses the properties of silver to create a protecting barrier that is naturally antimicrobial,” said Galasso. “This technology helps neutralize bacteria, microbes and fungi, preventing their reproduction and ensuring a cleaner and healthier sleep environment, which is great for hotel and resort use.”

She added, “This same layer is also treated with our innovative Molecular Printing technology, which infuses health-promoting molecules deep into the V/SMART, transforming it into a platform for well-being and restoration.”

The mattress, which is made in the USA, also features Piana Sleep’s Mandala cover, made with Repreve, a sustainable performance yarn.

“This cover not only offers quality but also represents our commitment to sustainability, working in harmony with both the human body and the planet as represented by the Mandala symbol,” the EVP said.

The Rinnovo mattress is available in all standard sizes, including twin, full, queen and king, along with custom options.

The mattress is made with up to 40% Piana Recycled technology, she pointed out, adding, “The way we produce it results in up to 46% less CO2 emissions and 52% less energy usage compared to an equivalent all-foam mattress. This is a huge difference from traditional mattress production, and it means that you can have a positive environmental impact with the simple action of purchasing the mattress.”

Another part of Piana Sleep’s sustainability mission is its take-back promise, where “we offer to take back our mattresses at the end of their lives, to be fully recycled at our facility, ensuring that no part of it ends up in a landfill,” Galasso said.

She pointed to the data, which shows that about 50,000 mattresses in the U.S. alone are thrown into landfills every single day.

“That’s a daily stack higher than Mount Everest and a line that would go around the Earth’s circumference in close to a year.” she said. “With our take-back promise, we can not only prevent our mattresses from ending up in these piles, but we also offer to take any non-Rinnovo mattress back for every Rinnovo purchased, immediately contributing to reversing the landfill statistics while offering a valuable service to hotels.”
